Researchers at Children's Hospital Boston have begun unraveling the mystery of how B lymphocytes - key infection-fighting cells in the body - are able to create many different kinds of specialized antibodies through selective gene mutations, while being protected from random mutations that could give rise to cancers.
HemaTerra Technologies, an end-to-end systems software provider to organizations that collect blood, platelets, plasma and other biologic products, was selected by New Zealand Blood Service for its HemaControl inventory management system. HemaControl is an enterprise system that assembles collections and operations planning, real-time inventory, hospital ordering and recruitment data to close any "gaps" in operations, reduce cost, and maximize resources.
The Bonnie J. Addario Lung Cancer Foundation will honor Fred R. Hirsch, M.D., Ph.D., with the 2015 Addario Lectureship Award for his continued leadership and expertise in lung cancer treatment and research. Dr. Hirsch, CEO of the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer, will receive the award at the 16th International Lung Cancer Congress held on July 30 – August 1 in Huntington Beach, California.
Researchers at the University of Rochester have developed a mathematical model to predict immune responses to infection with influenza A viruses, including novel viruses such as the emergent 2009 influenza A (H1N1). This model examines the contributions of specific sets of immune cells in fighting influenza A virus.
