Nathan Schmidt, Ph.D., has published research showing that microbes in the gut of mice can affect the severity of illness suffered from infection with Plasmodium, the parasite that causes malaria.
Depletion of a fatty molecule in human blood propels malaria parasites to stop replicating and causing illness in people and instead to jump ship to mosquitoes to continue the transmission cycle, according to a new study by an international research team.
Women may now have yet another reason to quit smoking given the results of a new study that is being reported online today in Menopause, the journal of The North American Menopause Society. The Swedish study involving 25,474 women is the first to quantify the combined effects of smoking and age at menopause on overall mortality in terms of survival time by investigating the role of smoking as a possible effect modifier.
Janssen Biotech, Inc., formerly Centocor Ortho Biotech Inc., announced today that the Gastrointestinal Drugs Advisory Committee of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration recommended the approval of REMICADE for the treatment of moderately to severely active ulcerative colitis in pediatric patients who have had an inadequate response to conventional therapy.
Commenting on a study of lung transplantation for children with cystic fibrosis, a leading pediatric pulmonologist calls the study "startling" in an editorial in this week's New England Journal of Medicine that accompanies the study.
