The NHS in Coventry and Warwickshire is urging people to choose wisely if they need to use health services over Easter. A&E doctors at University Hospital, Walsgrave have faced spiralling numbers of patients in recent months. And health chiefs are keen to keep the traditional Bank Holiday surge to a minimum as the unit is now a major trauma centre, dealing with more life-threatening illnesses and injuries from much of the Midlands.
National guidelines recommend that men with low- and intermediate -risk prostate cancer and life expectancies of less than 10 years should not be treated with radiation or surgery, since they are unlikely to live long enough to benefit from treatment. Yet it is unknown whether such men are unnecessarily receiving these aggressive local treatments, putting them at risk for potentially debilitating side effects.
Two polls, one conducted by the Kaiser Family Foundation, and another conducted by KFF and the Washington Post, find that a majority of Republicans and Democrats oppose plans to cut Medicare benefits or transform the program into a "definied-contribution" model.
A new study published in Diabetologia (the journal of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes) shows that children who have been infected with enterovirus are 48% more likely to have developed type 1 diabetes. The study is by Dr Tsai Chung-Li, China Medical University, Taiwan, and colleagues.
