Decision analysis techniques can help surgeons and patients evaluate alternatives for breast reconstruction-leading to a "good decision" that reflects the woman's preferences and values, according to an article in the October issue of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, the official medical journal of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS).
The Minneapolis-St. Paul Star Tribune: The Institute for Clinical Systems Improvement will make a system that helps doctors make more informed decisions available Minnesota doctors next year. The system has apparently eliminated about $28 million a year in unnecessary tests in a trial program in which it was made available to about 2,000 Minnesota doctors.
An international team led by scientists at A*STAR's Institute of Medical Biology (IMB) discovered that a protein, called TRIM28, normally present in the mother's egg, is essential right after fertilisation, to preserve certain chemical modifications or 'epigenetic marks' on a specific set of genes.
The XIX International AIDS Conference (AIDS 2012) that took place last week in Washington, D.C., "ignited momentum to shift from 'fighting AIDS' to 'ending AIDS,'" Mohga Kamal-Yanni, senior health adviser at Oxfam International, and Urvarshi Rajcoomer, policy and advocacy adviser at Oxfam in South Africa, write in a Mail & Guardian opinion piece.
