A promising new drug therapy used to treat abnormal swelling in the eye - a condition called diabetic macular edema - proved less effective than traditional laser treatments in a study funded by the National Eye Institute (NEI), part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
New York auditors says nursing homes were overpaid, while a Kentucky state senator says doctors at the University of Louisville misused Medicaid funds.
Noting that Bill Gates, co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, in his annual letter "argued that it is essential to carefully measure progress in innovation and global health," Stefano Bertozzi, director of HIV at the Gates Foundation, writes in a SciDev.Net opinion piece, "This is because while measuring the quantity of interventions is important, we also need to determine which interventions - and which approaches to them - create the greatest long-term impact."
One in four emergency department patients in 2006 waited longer to be evaluated by a clinician than recommended at triage, an increase from one in five in 1997, according to a report in the November 9 issue of Archives of Internal Medicine, one of the JAMA/Archives journals.
