In an effort to promote the application of mathematics to medical treatment, researchers in the University of Pittsburgh's Department of Mathematics will undertake a $2.5 million project to create models of how the brain and immune system function and change over time in response to certain illnesses, infections, and treatment.
When a cell divides, it passes on genetic information by producing copies of its DNA. Chemists have also learned to copy DNA. In the journal Angewandte Chemie, a German team has now introduced a new copying technique that uses a single strand of DNA as the "master copy", like a cell, but does not require enzymes.
Staph infections in hospitals are a serious concern, so much so that the term Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus is as commonly known as MRI. Far less known is that in many of these cases, patients are infecting themselves.
