Red Hill Studios, UCSF awarded two grants to develop computer-based physical therapy games

Red Hill Studios, a California-based serious games developer, in partnership with the UCSF School of Nursing, has been awarded two grants totaling $1.1 million from the National Institutes of Health to continue development, production and testing of computer-based physical therapy games for patients with Parkinson's disease and cerebral palsy.

Exercise helps teens quit smoking

Research has shown that a program that combines counseling with physical activity may offer teens a more effective way to stop smoking. Less than 5 percent of those who were assigned to a brief smoking cessation intervention had quit smoking after three months. But, in the group of teens that received smoking cessation counseling coupled with physical activity, almost 14 percent were off cigarettes at the three-month mark. And, the findings were most dramatic for boys. Nearly a quarter of the boys in the combination group had quit smoking at the end of three months.

Commonwealth Fund president to step down at end of 2012

Karen Davis will retire as president of the Commonwealth Fund, a health care research foundation, at the end of 2012. The foundation, based in New York, has hired an executive search firm to find Davis' successor. In a news release announcing her retirement, Davis said she would spend her final year helping with the leadership transition and "pursuing opportunities for contributing toward the work that is so important to ensuring that every American receives the best possible care and the opportunity to lead healthy, productive lives."

New $7M I-LABS MEG Brain Imaging Center opened to study infants, young children

The University of Washington Institute for Learning & Brain Sciences announced today the launch of a multi-year, multimillion-dollar initiative to foster new brain research discoveries and insights into how and when children learn. Washington State Governor Christine Gregoire, University of Washington President Mark Emmert and I-LABS co-directors Dr. Patricia Kuhl and Dr. Andrew Meltzoff officially opened the new $7 million I-LABS MEG Brain Imaging Center on the University of Washington campus, hosting the first brain imaging device in the world optimized for neuroscientific study in infants and young children.
