Students with symptoms of sleep disorders are more likely to receive bad grades in classes such as math, reading and writing than peers without symptoms of sleep disorders, according to a research abstract presented at SLEEP 2007, the 21st Annual Meeting of the Associated Professional Sleep Societies (APSS).
Drugmaker GlaxoSmithKline has agreed to plead guilty to fraud charges and pay $3 billion in total - with some money going to nearly every state - for promoting its bestselling antidepressants such as Paxil and Wellbutrin for unapproved uses, failing to report safety data about a top diabetes drug and improperly marketing other drugs.
The U.N.'s annual World Economic and Social Survey, released last week, "says it is critical to find new ways to help the world's poor as pledged cash fails to flow" and "calls for a tax on billionaires to help raise more than $400 billion a year for poor countries," Agence France-Presse reports.
A research team led by Mitchell Lazar, MD, PhD, Director of the Institute for Diabetes, Obesity, and Metabolism at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, has used state-of-the-art genetic technology to map thousands of positions where a molecular "master regulator" of fat-cell biology is nestled in DNA to control genes in these cells.
