As an embryo develops, different genes are turned on in different cells, to form muscles, neurons and other bodily parts. Inside each cell's nucleus, genetic sequences known as enhancers act like remote controls, switching genes on and off. Scientists at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) in Heidelberg, Germany, can now see - and predict - exactly when each remote control is itself activated, in a real embryo.
Molecular biologists at UT Southwestern Medical Center have identified a gene called NORAD that helps maintain the proper number of chromosomes in cells, and that when inactivated, causes the number of chromosomes in a cell to become unstable, a key feature of cancer cells.
The PhRMA Foundation has announced a shift in mission that will focus on building a better system of value assessment in U.S. health care – empowering patients and improving health outcomes and efficiencies – while helping shape a new era of multidisciplinary research and drug development, based strongly in the use of advanced technology and data.
The U.S. Department of State became an official partner of Together for Girls the global partnership to end sexual violence against girls announced last year by President William J. Clinton at the Annual Meeting of the Clinton Global Initiative.
