Breast cancer is the most common tumour amongst the female population. In recent years its prevalence has increased considerably without the reasons thereof being very clear, although lifestyle changes such as first pregnancy taking place at a later age or the reduction in the period of breast-feeding may play an important role.
Huma Q. Rana, MD of Harvard Medical School's Dana Farber Cancer Institute is the recipient of the 2014 Richard King Trainee Award. This award was instituted five years ago by the ACMG Foundation for Genetic and Genomic Medicine to encourage ABMG or genetic counseling trainees in their careers and to foster the publication of the highest quality research in ACMG's peer-reviewed journal, Genetics in Medicine (GIM).
Inhibitex, Inc. today reported top-line safety and efficacy data from its Phase II clinical trial of FV-100, an oral antiviral compound being developed to treat herpes zoster, more commonly referred to as shingles. The study was the first clinical trial to assess the antiviral activity of FV-100, included 350 shingles patients and compared two once-daily doses of FV-100 (200 mg and 400 mg) to an active control, valacyclovir, one of the most commonly-used antiviral drugs to treat shingles.
A recent study out of Finland found the overall rate for stroke was 8% higher in the two days after daylight saving time. Individuals with cancer were 25% more likely to have a stroke during that time, and people older than 65 were 20% more likely to have a stroke.
EMD Serono, Inc., an affiliate of Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany, today announced that new data from the company's multiple sclerosis portfolio of approved and investigational treatments will be presented at the 62nd Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Neurology taking place April 10 to 17, in Toronto, Canada.
