Scientists funded by the National Eye Institute report a novel gene therapy that halts vision loss in a canine model of a blinding condition called autosomal dominant retinitis pigmentosa (adRP). The strategy could one day be used to slow or prevent vision loss in people with the disease. NEI is part of the National Institutes of Health.
Researchers from the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health and the University of Southern California have found that more than a half million Americans are exposed to oil and gas "flaring" events -; the burning off of excess natural gas at production sites -; resulting in potentially serious health risks.
To assess differences and trends in personal chemical exposure, Oregon State University researchers deployed chemical-sampling wristbands to individuals on three continents.
The Russian Federation in 2010 spent more than $80 million to improve health in developing countries, according to a report prepared by the country's Ministry of Finance, which highlights "how the country is meeting its G8 commitments ahead of the upcoming summit in Deauville, France," the Moscow Times reports.
