The Toronto General Hospital today becomes the first healthcare institution in the world to unveil a novel technology-based platform aimed at shortening the time required to translate medical research into clinical practice. This will enable faster diagnoses and more rapid treatment for patients with heart disease and other conditions that are detected using advanced medical imaging devices.
Recently published advancements in pulmonary research suggest that the combination of non-invasive ventilation (NIV) and home oxygen therapy (HOT) can significantly prolong time to readmission or death for patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) following a life-threatening respiratory event or exacerbation. The five-year, multi-center study resulted in prolonged median time to readmission or death by nearly three months, and improved patient health-related quality of life in the first six weeks.
New research shows further evidence between COVID-19 infection and the development of long-term neurological symptoms. The findings found COVID-induced neuroinflammation and microvascular injury contributed to dementia-like symptoms. However, they also found evidence indicating a low possibility of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) directly invading the brain.
Republicans' proposed foreign aid cuts could damage food security programs in the developing world and create social instability requiring U.S. military intervention, advocates and government officials said on Thursday at a Capitol Hill event addressing hunger and rising food prices, Agence France-Presse reports (Zeitvogel, 3/3).
"The affected countries will have a major problem if we do not manage to control salmonella bloodstream infections with new antibiotics such as ciprofloxacin," cautions Prof Jürgen May.
