Your bosses want you to eat your broccoli, hit the treadmill and pledge you'll never puff on a cigarette. But a new study raises doubts that workplace wellness programs save the company money.
The brain is a coding machine: it translates physical inputs from the world into visual, olfactory, auditory, tactile perceptions via the mysterious language of its nerve cells and the networks which they form. Neural codes could in principle take many forms, but in regions forming bottlenecks for information flow or in areas important for memory, sparse codes are highly desirable.
Parents across Ontario will be soon receiving the second round of newly formatted report cards emphasizing the importance of how students work and how this contributes to their overall academic success. As parents and teachers review each child's progress they may want to consider whether vision problems might be a contributing factor to performance and behaviour in class.
