The American College of Surgeons has published new comprehensive guidelines that define the resources the nation's surgical facilities need to perform operations effectively and safely in infants and children.
Chronic pain affects hundreds of millions of people worldwide and is a major cause of disability, causing more disability than cancer and heart disease. Canadian researchers, including Michael Salter at SickKids are shedding light on the molecular dynamics of chronic pain. They have uncovered a critical role for a class of cells present in the brain and spinal cord, called microglia, in pain.
One of the greatest medical mysteries of our time has taken a leap forward in medical understanding with new study results announced by Dr. Daniel D. Rubens of Children's Hospital and Regional Medical Center in Seattle.
"Chin augmentation has increased approximately 70% in the last year, that's an astonishing number," says Dr. Darrick Antell, A spokesperson for the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. "We're much more aware of how we look and we're much more critical of ourselves," he said. He says a strong chin not only improves a patient's self esteem, it may also boost their bottom line. Experts say that may be part of the reason chin implants saw the biggest surge of any type of cosmetic procedure in the last year.
