Evidence of autism may be found in the composition and malfunction of the brain's blood vessels, a team of scientists has found. Their research sheds new light on the causes of autism, which previously had pointed to neurological make-up rather than to the vascular system, and identifies a new target for potential therapeutic intervention.
It is estimated that three to six out of every 1,000 children in the United States have autism - and the number of diagnosed cases is rising.
The link between obesity and disease has been well documented. There's evidence now that obesity and cancer have a strong link, as they've shown in the United States at least 90,000 cancer deaths a year can be attributed to obesity. University of Alberta researcher Richard Lamb is on his way to understanding the correlation and it's a good example of how the scientific process works.
Shimmer has developed an algorithm to obtain mobility data from a Shimmer3 sensor (accel + gyro) placed on a shoe. This algorithm is based on state of the art wearable sensor/biomechanics research and has already been tested on a young, healthy data-set in order to obtain normative standards to compare metrics to.
