In a small village in West Bengal, India, 7-month-old Anwesha is oblivious to the fact that in her community, for generations before her, many newborns did not even live to see their first birthday. In an age old tradition, the community believed that the survival of the newborn or the mother is pre-determined and no extra care or immunization should interfere with the inevitable. Patients with heart disease in Norway, a country with no fortification of foods with folic acid, had an associated increased risk of cancer and death from any cause if they had received treatment with folic acid and vitamin B12, according to a study in the November 18 issue of JAMA.
Although several studies suggest that women with denser breast tissue have an increased risk of breast cancer, a new study by Johns Hopkins researchers discredits breast density as a risk factor in and of itself, instead concluding that age and body fat, especially in the upper belly, contribute to the breast cancer seen in many patients.
