As a general rule, your DNA is not something you want rearranged. But there are exceptions - especially when it comes to fighting infections. Since the number of microbes in the world far surpasses the amount of human DNA dedicated to combat them, specialized cells in the immune system have adopted an ingenious, if potentially disastrous, strategy for making antibodies. These cells, called B lymphocytes, intentionally mutate their own DNA to ward off invaders they have never seen before.
Adocia announces today positive preliminary results for the first clinical trial on an innovative formulation combining insulin analog Glargine (Lantus, Sanofi), the gold standard basal insulin, with a rapid-acting insulin analog, Lispro (Humalog, Eli Lilly) using Adocia's BioChaperone technology.
VisEn Medical Inc., a leader in fluorescence imaging solutions from research through medicine, announced today that it has expanded its leading FMT imaging platform with an FMT™ Multi-Species Imaging Module, to extend FMT imaging and related applications into larger preclinical animal models. VisEn also announced that it will be presenting new study results from its recently-launched Cat B 750 FAST™ and Annexin-Vivo™ fluorescence imaging agents at the AACR 101st Annual Meeting.
"With much of the global economy facing slowing growth and uncertain prospects, especially in developed countries, a new World Bank report" - titled "The Fiscal Dimension of HIV/AIDS in Botswana, South Africa, Swaziland, and Uganda" - "urges African governments and their development aid donors to do significantly more to prevent new HIV infections" and "warns that current spending on HIV/AIDS relates to past infections and is a potentially misleading indicator of the long-term public cost of the fight against HIV/AIDS," a World Bank press release states.
Brazil is expanding its national HIV/AIDS treatment program to include about 35,000 additional people, the Associated Press/Seattle Times reports. "Ronaldo Hallal of the health ministry's Sexually Transmitted Disease Department said people with 500 or fewer CD4 cells per cubic millimeter will receive antiretroviral HIV treatment," increasing the cutoff from 350 or less CD4 cells per cubic millimeter prior to the expansion, the news service writes.
