During a coronary bypass procedure, surgeons redirect blood flow using an autologous bypass graft, most often derived from the patient's own veins. However, in certain situations where the patient does not have a suitable vein, surgeons must rely on synthetic vascular grafts which, while life-saving, are more prone to clot formation that eventually obstructs the graft.
The 'Red Alert for Women's Hearts' conference, taking place on 5 November 2009, at the European Heart House, Sophia Antipolis, France, will address the subject of Women and CVD. The conference is jointly organised by the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) and European Heart Network (EHN), as part of Work Package 6 of the EuroHeart project .
Today, at the Global Vaccine Summit, the Global Polio Eradication Initiative presented a comprehensive six-year plan, the first plan to eradicate all types of polio disease – both wild poliovirus and vaccine-derived cases – simultaneously.
A mutation that affects the proteins that package DNA-without changing the DNA itself-can cause a rare form of cancer, according to new findings in this week's Science from researchers at The Rockefeller University.
