The health reform bill currently pending in the House of Representatives, combined with the impact of the cuts being waved in front of Medicare-funded nursing homes - an estimated $12 billion over 10 years - will find Ohio's seniors in need of nursing and rehabilitative care on shaky ground.
In an analysis of Medicare billing data submitted by more than 2,300 United States physicians, researchers have calculated the average number of surgical slices, or cuts, made during Mohs micrographic surgery (MMS), a procedure that progressively removes thin layers of cancerous skin tissue in a way that minimizes damage to healthy skin and the risks of leaving cancerous tissue behind.
A team of Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH) scientists report finding a molecular "switch" that can "turn off" some cellular processes that are protective against aging and metabolic diseases. While more research is needed, the findings may open doors for new drug treatments to halt or slow development of metabolic diseases like type 2 diabetes or heart disease. The research findings appear in the December 1, 2010 issue of Cell Metabolism.
Scientists of Far Eastern Federal University get started studying the formation and survival mechanisms of the brain malignant tumors cells, i.e. glioma, to reveal new ways for diagnosis and therapy for this fatal disease.
In an effort to expand and streamline patient access to its high-quality cancer care, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center has introduced MSK Direct, a unique program in which MSK collaborates with external employers to simplify how their employees can engage with the institution for initial or ongoing cancer care.
