The Wall Street Journal examines a new effort to combat drug-resistant tuberculosis In India, noting "[a]n international health initiative has brokered a landmark accord that aims to halve the price patients pay for advanced tests for a strain of tuberculosis that is resistant to standard drugs."
The month of October is designated as Lewy Body Dementia month. Lewy body dementia (LBD) is a degenerative brain disease that progressively impairs thinking and movement, while impacting behavior and sleep. Although it affects an estimated 1.3 million people in the U.S., LBD is under-recognized, under-diagnosed and under-treated. It is most often misdiagnosed as Alzheimer's or Parkinson's disease.
The Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS) is pleased to see new legislation passed in Newfoundland and Labrador regulating certain health professions, including Medical Laboratory Technologists. The recently passed legislation, brought forward by the Ministry of Health and Community Services, directly addresses the recommendations made by Justice Margaret Cameron in the Commission of Inquiry on Hormone Receptor Testing Report.
They have also shown that any pancreatic β cells can be regenerated several times and that chemically-induced diabetes in mice can thus be "treated" repeatedly. The challenge for the researchers is now to show that these procedures can be applied to humans.
