Scientists at Duke University Medical Center have shown a connection between early drinking patterns and a tendency to be a heavy drinker in adulthood, in a study of adolescent rats.
"Until a few months ago Japan was the world's fifth biggest aid donor, according to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, lending or giving away $9.5bn a year," the Guardian reports. But the recent earthquake and tsunami have transformed the country "into a leading destination for international charity. In two months it has received what the Democratic Republic of the Congo is given in a year," according to the article.
A group of scientists from Spain, the UK and the United States has revealed the structure of a protein complex involved in liver and colon cancers. Both of these types of cancer are of significant social and clinical relevance as in 2012 alone, liver cancer was responsible for the second highest mortality rate worldwide, with colon cancer appearing third in the list.
A new study has found that the hormone leptin plays a key role in women's reproductive and neuroendocrine health and suggests a future for the hormone in treating a number of conditions including exercise-induced bone loss, anorexia and in some cases of infertility.
In women, hormone therapy is a risk factor for venous thrombosis, a blood clot forming deep inside the vein. Despite the fact that the disorder is rare, it increases exponentially during menopause and can be deadly.
