Up to 1,000 registered nurses from Maine to California will march and rally in Washington, DC, today to press the case for moving beyond insurance reform to improving the quality of care in U.S. hospitals and other healthcare settings.
NPR talks with Dr. David Casarett, associate professor of medicine at the University of Pennsylvania who started the palliative care service at the VA hospital in Philadelphia, about "the rhetoric around the end-of-life issues addressed in some of the proposed health care legislation" (Block, 8/18).
Thanks to the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act signed into law by President Obama on March 23, 2010, Medicare enrollees who enter the dreaded "doughnut hole" - the Medicare Part D coverage gap that has made seniors responsible for all their drug costs between $2,830 and $6,440 - will save $250 in 2010. But Betterthanmedicare.com is already saving seniors thousands of dollars, because the global mail-order pharmacy has no doughnut hole.
