AliveCor, the developer of a breakthrough mobile electrocardiogram (ECG) recorder, today announced results from a study that demonstrated the accuracy of the company's iPhone-based device, by comparing its Lead I to Lead I from a conventional 12-lead ECG. The study found that the iPhone-based event recorder is an accurate clinical tool for ECG assessment and could prove to be a new tool for allowing immediate recording and analysis of an ECG rhythm.
Five of Florida's major public and non-profit hospitals scored so poorly on return rates for Medicare patients that they will get preference this summer in a grant program to fix the problem, government documents show.
The announcement at the end of January of the largest coordinated effort to fight neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) provides "more reason to hope that we may soon see a future free of these diseases," Adetokunbo Lucas, former director of the UNICEF/UNDP/World Bank/WHO Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases, writes in a Daily Monitor opinion piece.
St. Jude Children's Research Hospital scientists have discovered a way to target the immune system to shrink or eliminate tumors in mice without causing autoimmune problems. Researchers also found evidence that the same mechanism may operate in humans. The study was published today in the advance online edition of Nature.
Alzheimer's disease has been described as the "looming epidemic on the horizon." More than 5 million Americans currently suffer from this neurodegenerative disease that robs patients of their memories, and this number is projected to triple by the middle of the century.
