Surprising findings by Queen's University researchers have shed new light on how the 'sunshine vitamin' - D - increasingly used to treat and prevent cancer and other diseases is broken down by our bodies.
While the blood-brain barrier (BBB) protects the brain from harmful chemicals occurring naturally in the blood, it also obstructs the transport of drugs to the brain. In an article in Nature scientists at the Swedish medical university Karolinska Institutet now present a potential solution to the problem. The key to the BBB is a cell-type in the blood vessel walls called pericytes, and the researchers hope that their findings will one day contribute to new therapies for diseases like Alzheimer's and stroke.
For depressed people with bipolar disorder who are taking a mood stabilizer, adding an antidepressant medication is no more effective than a placebo (sugar pill), according to results published online on March 28, 2007 in the New England Journal of Medicine.
The measure is designed to address a part of the health overhaul that requires employers to offer coverage to employees who work more than 30 hours per week.
A larger head may be offer natural protection against dementia and Alzheimer's disease say researchers in a study conducted on 270 patients and published in the journal Neurology.
