Older patients whose physicians take part in a practice audit and education-based intervention have reduced odds of depression and self-harm at 24 months – significantly so in the case of self-harm, show results of an Australian trial.
A novel vaccine designed to protect people from both Lassa fever and rabies showed promise in preclinical testing, according to new research published in Nature Communications.
A newly published study in the October 2010 issue of The Journal of the American Dental Association (JADA), conducted at New York University's College of Dentistry, concludes that use of a mucoadhesive patch, affixed to the roof of the mouth, provides statistically significant and sustainable improvements in salivary flow rates and subjective moistness for dry mouth sufferers. An estimated 30 million Americans deal with dry mouth, or xerostomia, an uncomfortable oral health condition which can have a detrimental effect on overall oral health.
"Beyond integration across the two diseases, the [Global Action Plan for the Prevention and Control of Pneumonia and Diarrhea (GAPPD) released by the WHO and UNICEF last week] is an opportunity to meld global and local agendas, giving national governments a comprehensive tool to determine the specific plans, investments, and partners needed to address the unique needs of their countries and achieve the greatest health impact for their citizens," PATH CEO Steve Davis writes in the Huffington Post's "Global Motherhood" blog.
Treatment of inoperable advanced liver cancer with the agent doxorubicin (routinely used to treat this condition) in addition to the agent sorafenib resulted in greater overall survival and progression-free survival, compared to patients who received treatment with doxorubicin alone, according to a study in the November 17 issue of JAMA.
