Kristi York Wooten, founder of SustenanceGroup.org and an advocate for fighting hunger and poverty, "canvassed a panel of colleagues and experts for thoughts on how corporations and governments and the rest of us can make a difference to ensure a sustainable future," and presents her findings in this post on the Huffington Post's "Impact" blog.
A recent study, performed in Chicago and Rabat, Morocco, found that a novel finger-prick test for infection with the parasite Toxoplasma gondii during pregnancy -; and many other potential applications -; is 100 percent sensitive and 100 percent specific for detecting the presence of this life-damaging microorganism.
UCSF researchers have discovered that a protein called B1N1 is necessary for the heart to contract. The findings, published in the Feb. 16 issue of the open access journal PLoS Biology, shed light not only on what makes a heart beat but also on heart failure, a disease where cardiac cells are no longer able to contract and pump blood through the body.
Titan Spine announced that it will begin full commercial release of its new Endoskeleton® TC system first quarter of 2011. The Endoskeleton® TC is an interbody fusion device for the cervical spine. The product received 510(k) clearance in July of this year and has been in limited market release since early August. The device has an acid etched titanium surface and is biomechanically designed to promote spinal fusion.
Aniak, Alaska, is a Yu'pik village of 500 people on the Yukon-Kuskokwim delta, about 400 miles northwest of Anchorage. It is in this special and isolated community where I practice as a dental therapist, trained and certified to deliver some, but not all, types of dental care. Dental therapists have been practicing in Alaska for nine years and now provide routine dental care to 40,000 Native Alaskans. In the United States about forty-seven million people live in areas where there is a shortage of dentists, and millions more can't afford to see them. For so many Americans, even the most basic dental care is out of reach. Yet right here in Alaska, I think we've found part of the solution (Conan Murat, November, 2013).
