Three genes that have barely been studied to date have now provided fresh knowledge about patients with suicidal backgrounds. This is the result of a study by a team of Spanish researchers at Mount Sinai Hospital and Columbia University in the City of New York (United States), which found that several mutations are involved. This finding could help to develop future genetic tests to identify predisposition to suicide, without ignoring the importance of social and cultural factors.
Bladder cancer is the fifth most commonly diagnosed cancer in the United States, yet most people know nothing about it. To help enhance the public's understanding of the risks and signs of bladder cancer and the importance of early detection and treatment options, the Bladder Cancer Advocacy Network (BCAN) will hold its regional Bladder Cancer Patient Forum "Understanding Bladder Cancer" on Saturday, October 23, 2010, in New York City at the New York Academy of Medicine.
Yale School of Medicine researchers are recruiting patients nationally for a clinical trial using transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) to help still the voices that are so troubling to some persons with schizophrenia.
The use of combined positron emission tomography and computed tomography can confirm a suspected colorectal cancer recurrence at an early stage, helping significantly in treatment planning and improved targeted patient care, according to a study to be presented at the ARRS 2010 Annual Meeting in San Diego, CA.
For the fourth consecutive year, outcomes for patients receiving allogeneic transplants through the Blood and Marrow Transplant Program at Roswell Park Cancer Institute (RPCI) have been shown to be significantly better than would be expected among the patient population treated.
