Although hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) cures many blood diseases, two-thirds of long-term survivors report at least one chronic health condition after the procedure, according to a recent study published online in Blood, the journal of the American Society of Hematology.
Across the world, more people are living longer. But "whether the extra years will be good ones - and whether societies and economies will benefit as a result - depends on the actions we take now," states an editorial in a new supplemental issue of the Journals of Gerontology, Series A: Biological Sciences and Medical Sciences from The Gerontological Society of America.
A particular gene variation appears to significantly increase the risk that individuals with cirrhosis of the liver will go on to develop hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), a liver tumor that is the third leading cause of cancer death.
