The U.S. Food and Drug Administration recently approved the first new drug to fight tuberculosis (TB) in more than 40 years, but treatment still takes six months, 200 pills and leaves 40 percent of patients uncured. Thus, new targets are needed. Today in ACS Central Science, researchers report they have identified one such target - a gene that allows the disease to camp out in human immune cells, and is thus essential for the organism's proliferation.
A new study reports that colonoscopies done with suboptimal bowel preparation are associated with relatively high adenoma (precancerous polyp) miss rates, suggesting that suboptimal bowel preparation substantially decreases colonoscopy effectiveness and may mandate an early follow-up examination.
Smiths Medical, a leading global medical device manufacturer, announced today it has received FDA 510(k) clearance to market its CADD-Solis pain management system version 3.0 with Programmed Intermittent Bolus and Patient Controlled Analgesics delivery in the United States. The new customizable, infusion system will help healthcare providers overcome challenges in maintaining effective epidural analgesia during labor and delivery or with post-operative pain management.
Protecting the stem cells that reside in and around the hippocampus - a C-shaped area in the temporal lobe on both sides of the brain associated with the ability to form and store memories - substantially reduces the rate of cancer patients' memory loss during whole-brain radiotherapy without a significant risk of recurrence in that area of the brain, a new study shows.
