Duke University Medical Center researchers have identified a new protein that plays a critical role in enabling the heart to respond to such external stimuli as exercise or stress, as well as in the progressive loss of heart function that is heart failure, the researchers said.
BARRX Medical, Inc., a leader in developing minimally invasive medical devices to remove precancerous tissue from the gastrointestinal tract, reported today that the American Gastroenterological Association has issued the AGA Medical Position Statement on the Treatment of Barrett's Esophagus.
Johns Hopkins researchers say they have discovered that the central nervous system's oligodendroglia cells, long believed to simply insulate nerves as they "fire" signals, are unexpectedly also vital to the survival of neurons. Damage to these insulators appears to contribute to brain injury in neurodegenerative diseases such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig's disease for the Yankee baseball great who died from the disease.
Bristol-Myers Squibb Company announced today that 22 abstracts on the Company's research in liver disease have been accepted for presentation at The Liver Meeting 2011, the 62nd annual meeting of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases, in San Francisco, November 4 - 8.
