A child born in a Glasgow, Scotland suburb can expect a life 28 years shorter than another living only 13 kilometres away. A girl in Lesotho is likely to live 42 years less than another in Japan. In Sweden, the risk of a woman dying during pregnancy and childbirth is 1 in 17 400; in Afghanistan, the odds are 1 in 8. Biology does not explain any of this. Instead, the differences between - and within - countries result from the social environment where people are born, live, grow, work and age.
Covalon Technologies Ltd. (the "Company" or "Covalon"), an advanced medical technologies company, today announced that further to its press release of August 16, 2013, it has completed, subject to final approval of the TSX Venture Exchange, a non-brokered private placement comprised of 750 units (the "Units") at a price of $1,000 per Unit for gross proceeds of $750,000. Each Unit consists of $1,000 principal amount of 12% senior secured convertible debenture (the "Debentures" and each a "Debenture") and 6,451 warrants (each, a "Warrant").
The first use of deep brain stimulation to the brain's so-called "feeding center" - the lateral hypothalamic area (LHA) - was associated with a weight loss trend in morbidly obese patients whose stimulation was tuned to increase metabolism with novel guidance from metabolic chamber data, according to a pilot study presented at the International Neuromodulation Society's 11th World Congress by Dr. Michael Oh of the Department of Neurosurgery at the Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pa.
New research suggests that pronouns may play a far greater role than simply replacing a proper name in a sentence. A University of South Carolina study suggests that pronouns help keep the brain's complex circuitry and limited memory system from being overloaded.
Work by a University of Queensland researcher will make the trip to the doctor for a prostate cancer check a lot more appealing for men.
