Astrid Skreosen has worked for many years as an auxiliary nurse in the maternity ward in Skien Hospital. She became fed up with the little mats which were supposed to lie under women who were giving birth, and were intended to soak up waste products and fluids.
Researchers have found that the distance patients cover during the 6-minute walk test depends on the instructions they are given, indicating that changing the current protocol may enhance the accuracy and reproducibility of the test.
It seems an infarction, but it's not. It's called Tako-Tsubo syndrome, or stress-induced cardiomyopathy, and it's a rare disease which at first used to be confused with the far more common (and dangerous) cardiac infarction. Patients arrive to the emergency room with the characteristic heart attack symptoms: acute pain in the chest, an electrocardiogram with the typical changes and the release of those enzymes associated with the usual heart disease.
New study by Mount Sinai researchers may lead to improved stem cell therapies for patients with compromised immune systems due to intensive cancer therapy or autoimmune disease. The study is published in this week's issue of Cell.
