According to the study, thalassemia patients overproduce a protein called GDF15, which suppresses the production of a liver protein, hepcidin, which in turn leads to an increase in the uptake of dietary iron in the gut.
With a $4.6 million grant from the National Institutes of Health (under the Bioengineering Research Partnership program), research led by Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute will make its important final steps toward the development of a safer, synthetic alternative to current heparin. The researchers believe that kilogram quantities of the new drug could be developed in under five years.
A new tool is being developed by experts in Manchester which automatically searches medical images for early signs of osteoporosis in the spine by identifying fractures there and could help reduce the number of future potentially fatal hip fractures.
Beckman Coulter collaborated with the American Society for Cell Biology to sponsor the Third Annual ASCB Kaluza Prizes for academic excellence.
Terumo Cardiovascular Group introduces the newest addition to the CAPIOX Oxygenator portfolio – the CAPIOX FX Advance Oxygenator. The CAPIOX FX Advance replaces the current CAPIOX FX15 and FX25 line of oxygenators manufactured in Elkton, Maryland.
