The WHO on Tuesday launched a vaccination campaign in Afghanistan that will use "a new and more effective polio vaccine" for the first time, Reuters reports (Nebehay, 12/15).
Sandra Orsulic, PhD, director of Women's Cancer Biology in the Women's Cancer Program at the Cedars-Sinai Samuel Oschin Comprehensive Cancer Institute, was awarded a $250,000 grant from Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation to study cell metabolism in childhood sarcomas.
Boston Scientific has received U.S. Food and Drug Administration approval for the ACUITY X4 Quadripolar Left Ventricular (LV) leads. The FDA approval of the quadripolar leads, the wires that connect cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) devices to the heart, marks the first time the company will offer a full X4 CRT system – both the device and the leads – to the U.S. market.
The New York Times: Republicans are hopeful they can pick up enough seats in November's midterm elections to chip away at the new health law. "This goal, though not fleshed out in a detailed legislative proposal, is much more than a campaign slogan. That conclusion emerged from interviews with a wide range of Republican lawmakers, who said they were determined to chip away at the law if they could not dismantle it." Republicans are expected to release specifics of the plan Thursday.
Scientists have improved upon their own previous world-best efforts to pluck out just the right stem cells to address the brain problem at the core of multiple sclerosis and a large number of rare, fatal children's diseases.
