In what has already been a historically busy year for disaster relief, The American Red Cross is responding once again to the ongoing flooding in the Midwest, as well as in states impacted by the recent tornadoes, flooding and blizzards.
A new study has shown the ill effects of surgery in the elderly. Results of the Australian study shows that one in five older patients will suffer complications from surgery and one in 20 will die within 30 days. Lead author and Associate Professor David Story from the University of Sydney and his team looked at more than 4,100 patients aged over 70 for the study.
Alcohol hangovers are more significant and costly than people realize, new research shows. Although individuals may be "street legal" to drive a car, or go to work and operate machinery, they can be just as impaired with a hangover as if they were over the alcohol limit.
Research from Mayo Clinic included in the November issue of JAMA Neurology identifies a new biomarker for brain and spinal cord inflammation, allowing for faster diagnosis and treatment of patients.
The medical use of cannabis is growing. Medical marijuana may improve symptoms including pain and anorexia. While it may improve nausea and vomiting, it can rarely cause a hyperemesis syndrome with chronic use.
