Covidien plc today reported results for the first quarter of fiscal 2013 (October - December 2012). First-quarter net sales of $3.06 billion were 5% above the $2.90 billion reported in the comparable period a year ago. Foreign exchange rate movement lowered the quarterly sales growth rate by one percentage point.
A team of Johns Hopkins biochemists has identified a mixed bag of five key proteins out of thousands secreted into blood draining from the heart's blood vessels that may together or in certain quantities form the basis of a far more accurate early warning test than currently in use of impending heart attack in people with severely reduced blood flow, or ischemia.
Scientists from the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute in Detroit presented preliminary data that shows nitrogen-containing bisphosphonates, therapeutic agents used to promote bone health and inhibit resorption, may cause a slightly poorer survival rate in post-menopausal women with early stage breast cancer who take them for their anti-osteoporosis properties.
The Center for Behavioral Neuroscience at Georgia State University has received a two-year, exploratory grant from the National Institute of Mental Health to develop transformative genome engineering research tools.
"Family planning is one of the best public health interventions that can be made," U.S. Ambassador for Global Women's Issues Melanne Verveer said in an interview with Amar Bakshi, editor of CNN World's "Global Public Square" (GPS) blog, adding, "It makes such a difference in a woman's life for her to be able to have the wherewithal - the family planning contraceptives available so that she can decide the size and the spacing of her children."
