Appendicitis is the most common childhood surgical emergency, but the diagnosis can be challenging, especially in children, often leading to either unnecessary surgery in children without appendicitis, or a ruptured appendix and serious complications when the condition is missed.
Three emerging technologies have the potential to significantly improve supplies of drugs to combat malaria, according to a report published today.
The Foundation has donated a latest-generation gene sequencer to the hospital's Cardiovascular Research Unit for use in its research project "Genetic testing in cardiovascular pathologies linked to sudden cardiac death among young athletes".
"In May, President Obama announced the implementation of the New Alliance for Food Security and Nutrition that emerged out of the G8 summit at Camp David," Zach Silberman, a policy associate with the U.S. Global Leadership Coalition, writes in the USGLC's blog, adding, "As part of the alliance, the United States launched workshops in Africa last week that are geared towards implementing the initiative's goal of boosting public-private partnerships through cooperation between the G8 nations, African countries, and the private sector."
Participants are being enrolled in the first clinical trial that tests the use of retinal progenitor cells to treat retinitis pigmentosa, reported project director Dr. Henry Klassen of UCI's Gavin Herbert Eye Institute and Sue & Bill Gross Stem Cell Research Center. The product of stem cell research at UCI, these retinal progenitors are similar to stem cells in terms of potential regenerative properties, but they're specific to the retina.
