When accidents that involve traumatic brain injuries occur, a speedy diagnosis followed by the proper treatment can mean the difference between life and death. A research team, led by Jason D. Riley in the Section on Analytical and Functional Biophotonics at the U.S. National Institutes of Health, has created a handheld device capable of quickly detecting brain injuries such as hematomas, which occur when blood vessels become damaged and blood seeps out into surrounding tissues where it can cause significant and dangerous swelling.
Researchers in Barcelona, Spain have conducted a study showing that low birth weight seems to be an independent risk factor for severe illness among non-elderly adults with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).
Residential segregation is linked to many racial disparities in health, including cancer, high blood pressure, and diabetes.
Catalyst Pharmaceutical Partners, Inc., a biopharmaceutical company that acquires, in-licenses, develops and commercializes prescription drugs for the treatment of diseases of the central nervous system, today reported financial results for the fourth quarter and year ended December 31, 2009.
