Researchers from Rhode Island Hospital have identified a protein that plays a dual role in the liver during sepsis. The protein, known as RIP1, acts both as a "death switch" and as a pro-survival mechanism. The ability to identify the triggers for these functions may play a key role in treating sepsis in the future. The study is published online in advance of print in the journal Shock.
Carefx Corporation, a leading provider of interoperable workflow solutions, and Imprivata®, Inc., the employee access management company, today announced that Johns Hopkins Health System, an internationally recognized group of healthcare institutions, has selected Carefx Fusionfx and Imprivata OneSign to deliver an integrated clinical access solution that streamlines access to workstations, applications and patient data. The complete, integrated system will launch in early 2010.
A new Kaiser Family Foundation poll found that most Americans oppose the GOP plan to cut Medicaid, throwing into question the conventional wisdom that this health insurance program for the poor lacks the widespread public support generally attached to Medicare.
Utah Republican Gov. Gary R. Herbert has announced that the state "will join 29 other states and the District of Columbia" to run their own high-risk health insurance pools, while "[o]ther states let the federal government handle the program, concerned they would have to pay for it if they exhausted their federal funding," The Wall Street Journal reports.
