In recent years, cannabinoids-the active chemicals in medical marijuana- have been increasingly touted as a potential treatment for a range of neurological and psychiatric disorders. In a Developmental Medicine & Child Neurology review, investigators compare their efficacy with antiepileptic drugs for children with epilepsy.
Oleocanthal, a naturally-occurring compound found in extra-virgin olive oil, alters the structure of neurotoxic proteins believed to contribute to the debilitating effects of Alzheimer's disease. This structural change impedes the proteins' ability to damage brain nerve cells.
NorthShore University HealthSystem (NorthShore) Foundation has received a $1.5 million gift for the creation of the Center for the Study of Complex Diseases. The development of the Center, which is being established within the NorthShore Research Institute, is made possible through a generous gift by Mr. and Mrs. Richard L. Keyser of Glencoe, Ill., through the Keyser Family Research Fund.
Among the 25 biggest cities, uninsured rates last year ranged from almost 25 percent in Miami and 23 percent in Houston to just more than 4 percent in Boston and 7.5 percent in Pittsburgh, according to Census data.
