Genzyme Corporation (Nasdaq: GENZ) announced today that its supplemental New Drug Application for Clolar® (clofarabine) will be discussed Tuesday, September 1 at a public meeting of the FDA's Oncologic Drugs Advisory Committee in Silver Spring, Maryland. The panel is expected to consider the clinical trial results Genzyme submitted to support the approval and labeling of Clolar to treat older adult patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML), the most common type of acute leukemia in adults.
Biologists at New York University have uncovered one way that biological clocks control neuronal activity - a discovery that sheds new light on sleep-wake cycles and offers potential new directions for research into therapies to address sleep disorders and jetlag.
Legislation to overhaul the American health system lacks an overarching plan to curb the rising costs of medicine, according to Atul Gawande, the influential surgeon and writer, in an essay for the Dec. 14 issue of The New Yorker. "Does the bill end medicine's destructive piecemeal payment system? Does it replace paying for quantity with paying for quality? Does it institute nationwide structural changes that curb costs and raise quality? It does not," Gawande writes. "Instead, what it offers is . . . pilot programs."
