TomoTherapy Incorporated announced today that there will be more than 40 presentations at the 10th Biennial ESTRO Conference on Physics and Radiation Technology for Clinical Radiotherapy that explore use of the TomoTherapy treatment system. The TomoTherapy system - a versatile, CT scanner-based device that integrates image guidance for increased treatment accuracy and helical radiation therapy delivery for enhanced tumor targeting - is helping cancer centers advance patient care around the world.
The scientists report the case of a newborn that had suffered a massive heart attack in the first hours of life. It was caused by a blockage in a vital coronary vessel. "The baby's heart was severely damaged. Astonishingly, the baby recovered very quickly," said Bernhard Haubner, a cardiologist and researcher, and his colleague, Johanna Schneider, in an article just published in the journal "Circulation Research".
A majority of college students is receptive to donating blood or other genetic material for scientific research, according to a new study from Southern Methodist University, Dallas.
A new report by the Government Accountability Office "finds that state and federal officials failed to detect millions of dollars in Medicaid prescription drug abuse," USA Today reports. "An audit of the government program in five large states found about 65,000 instances of beneficiaries improperly obtaining potentially addictive drugs at a cost of about $65 million during 2006 and 2007 — including thousands of prescriptions written for dead patients or by people posing as doctors."
Genetic mutations-sudden, random and usually harmful changes to the structure of a gene-are only one factor that determines the ultimate fate of a cell. Chicago scientists have discovered that a non-genetic molecular process also can play a role, and that experimenters can influence this process in bacteria, they report in the April 1 issue of the journal Nature.
