There is now a clear target for the treatment of acute pancreatitis, according to researchers at Lund University in Sweden, who have discovered that a well-known protein plays a central role in the development of the disease. It is likely that the protein is also highly significant for other inflammatory diseases.
To me the most exciting aspect of pre-clinical imaging is its broad range, from very basic science up to applied science. The AP/Washington Post examines how the millions of Pakistani refugees fleeing from the army's offensive against the Taliban in the northwest of the country are overwhelming the country's health care system. "The crisis has exhausted doctors, used up limited supplies of medicines and buried hospitals in a mountain of red tape as they try to get money and medicine for the crisis" pushing the entire health system to the brink of collapse, the AP/Washington Post writes.
Decision Resources, one of the world's leading research and advisory firms focusing on pharmaceutical and healthcare issues, finds that Centocor Ortho Biotech's Stelara, the first interleukin (IL)-12/23 inhibitor to enter the psoriasis drug market in the U.S., is expected to change the prescribing habits of dermatologists and substantially alter patient flow to currently marketed biologic agents, including Amgen's Enbrel and Abbott's Humira.
The Emergency Department at King's College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is a busy trauma centre dealing with over 400 cases every day. Point-of-care ultrasound has been used in the department of over 10 years, and now forms an integral part of many patient assessment pathways. Emergency Medicine Consultant Dr George Nada explained: "We currently use ultrasound for four main activities: FAST scans, insertion of peripheral lines, AAA screens and basic echocardiography, but it also has applications in many other areas, such as guiding the placement of chest drains, ascetic taps and femoral nerve blocks."
