The recent outbreaks of communicable diseases such as SARS and avian flu in particular, have prompted the United Nations health agency's policy-making body to adopt a new set of regulations concerning responses from Governments and international bodies when new diseases emerge and old ones reappear.
Using genetic sequencing to understand the evolutionary relationships among pathogens, an international team of researchers-;including several from the Center for Drug Use and HIV/HCV Research at New York University-;has developed a new method to determine how effective interventions are against the spread of infectious diseases like HIV.
American researchers say when it comes to a teenager's risky sexual behaviour mothers deal with it differently to fathers and a father's usual response is to up the level of supervision and monitoring of their children.
The largest analysis of its kind has found that Caucasians are much more likely that people in other racial/ethnic groups to develop a rare bone and soft tissue cancer called Ewing's sarcoma. In addition, among Caucasians with this cancer, men are more likely to die than women.
Exposure to light appears to have therapeutic effects on Alzheimer's disease patients, a Wayne State University researcher has found.
