New Northwestern Medicine- research on the genetics of diabetes could one day help women know their risk for developing gestational diabetes before they become pregnant - and lead to preventive measures to protect the health of offspring.

Tenet Healthcare withdraws from preliminary discussions regarding potential acquisition of Healthscope

Tenet Healthcare Corporation today announced it has withdrawn from preliminary discussions regarding a potential acquisition of the Australian private hospital operator Healthscope Limited. Due to the sequence of events associated with the acquisition process, including the premature disclosure of non-public information regarding Tenet's preliminary interest in Healthscope, Tenet has been unable to complete the work necessary to thoroughly convey to shareholders the potential value, including the inherent risks and opportunities, of this transaction.

Findings suggest new ways to help the immune system fight pancreatic cancer

Findings published today in the journal Science Translational Medicine suggest that a type of white blood cell called tumor associated macrophages that have been deceived by pancreatic cancer cells into not attacking them can be "re-programmed" by a specially designed molecule that activates a protein found on their surfaces.

Use of estrogen alone does not increase lung cancer mortality in postmenopausal women: Study

Use of estrogen alone did not increase lung cancer mortality in postmenopausal women, according to a study published online August 13 in The Journal of the National Cancer Institute. In the Women's Health Initiative (WHI) trial, which consisted of several clinical trials on postmenopausal women, one study showed women with previous hysterectomy taking combined estrogen plus progestin therapy had a statistically significant increase in lung cancer mortality, but not incidence. Other studies with combined hormone therapy have had conflicting results. But the influence of estrogen alone was unclear.

SLIT immunotherapy effective for long-term remission of bothersome allergy symptoms

Antihistamines and nasal steroids offer good short-term options for people with mild allergy, but allergy immunotherapy, better known as "allergy shots," is a preferred method for achieving long term remission of more bothersome allergy symptoms. Allergists mark the 100th anniversary of immunotherapy and present the latest advances at the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (ACAAI) annual scientific meeting in Phoenix, Nov. 11-16.
