A meta-analysis of previously published cancer research showed no difference in five-year and 10-year survival rates between patients who underwent radical cystectomy, which is the surgical removal of the bladder, and a bladder-preserving combined modality treatment (CMT) plan, which combines radiation therapy, chemotherapy and the removal of the bladder tumor.
In April 2009, the Chinese government announced the guidelines for healthcare reform, with the core principle of providing universal healthcare services to the country's 1.3 billion population. China will invest 850 billion RMB ($124 billion) on healthcare from 2009 to 2011, further stimulating demand for medical devices, in what is already one of the world's fastest growing markets for medical technology. One year later, a number of new regulations and guidelines are in place, which are beginning to reshape the structure of the Chinese healthcare industry.
U.N. Assistant Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Catherine Bragg on Saturday said food shortages are "a chronic problem" in southern Africa, "where more than 5.5 million people in eight countries need aid this year, a 40 percent increase compared to 2011," according to the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), the Associated Press reports.
GenSpera, Inc. has entered into a cooperation agreement with the University of Copenhagen, in Copenhagen, Denmark, to collaborate on the "SPOTLight" (Sustainable Production of Thapsigargin using Light) project.
