Today, about half the world's population lives in areas at risk of malaria transmission. The disease is transmitted to humans through bites from mosquitoes, and each year causes hundreds of thousands of deaths worldwide, with about 1,500 of these in the United States.
In an analysis from the Action to Control Cardiovascular Risk in Diabetes (ACCORD) trial, one of the largest studies of its kind to determine whether intensive blood glucose (sugar) control worked better than standard blood sugar control among diabetics, results show that the benefits of intensive therapy need to be balanced against the increase in total and cardiovascular disease-related death, increased weight gain, and high risk for severe low blood sugar.
Data from four pivotal Phase III clinical trials demonstrate that linagliptin achieved statistically significant and sustained reductions in blood sugar as measured by hemoglobin A1c, fasting plasma glucose and postprandial glucose. Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals, Inc. is investigating the dipeptidyl peptidase 4 inhibitor as an oral once-daily tablet, as monotherapy and combination therapy, to treat type 2 diabetes.
St. Jude Medical, Inc., a global medical device company, today announced Japanese Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare approval and reimbursement approval of its Therapy Cool Path Ablation Catheter. This marks the company's first entry into the irrigated catheter ablation market in Japan.
