The so-called RANK protein and the molecule that binds to it, the RANK ligand or RANKL, form a focus of the work of Josef Penninger, director of the Institute of Molecular Biotechnology (IMBA) in Vienna. In 1999 his group deleted the RANKL gene from mice and showed that the RANK/RANKL system was the "master regulator" governing bone loss (Kong et al. 1999 Nature 402, 304-309).
A new study examined the relationship between fasting hyperglucagonemia - which can negatively affect glucose metabolism in patients with type 2 diabetes - and several biochemical and glycemic factors in subjects with T2D or in a nondiabetic control group.
A team of scientists from Geisinger and Tempus have found that artificial intelligence can predict risk of new atrial fibrillation (AF) and AF-related stroke.
Exposure to radiation from imaging equipment is constantly subjected to scrutiny from regulatory authorities. Ultrasound poses no radiation threat and is constantly further developed to accentuate primary and secondary diagnosis. The next wave in ultrasound technology will witness advancements in Elastography and Contrast Enhanced Ultrasound (CEUS) for diagnosis.
Researchers at the Université de Montreal (UdeM) and the Montreal Neurological Institute (MNI), McGill University have discovered that cells which normally support nerve cell (neuron) survival also play an active and major role in the death of neurons in the eye.
