The American College of Medical Genetics issued a position statement to support the use of non-invasive prenatal screening in women with singleton pregnancies.
Urologists treating patients with suspicious ureteral or kidney lesions now have a tool to help them more effectively make diagnoses. Cook Medical has introduced the BIGopsy Backloading Biopsy Forceps, a device designed and engineered to obtain large renal or ureteral tissue specimens up to 4 mm3 for cancer diagnosis. The larger sample size helps produce biopsy results without the need for repeat tissue-sampling procedures associated with other biopsy devices.
Vanderbilt's Eskind Diabetes Clinic has been selected to examine the ability of the drug abatacept to prevent type 1 diabetes (T1D). As part of the TrialNet consortium, Vanderbilt will be one of 14 North American sites observing the effects of the drug in people at high risk to develop T1D.
A new Yale University study looks at why there is such a big difference in the mortality rates among patients treated for heart attacks in hospitals across the country. The study appears in the March issue of the Annals of Internal Medicine.
The health ministry of Fiji has issued a ban on public gatherings in the province of Bua due to an outbreak of typhoid. It has been reported that since January, 41 cases were recorded in Bua, in the northern island of Vanua Levu, with many concentrated in small villages. Fiji's main island of Viti Levu bore the brunt of a major Typhoid outbreak this time last year. At this stage, there have only been isolated cases.
