Officially, Minnesota doesn't pay for an intensive type of autism therapy. Yet it has - but only for some families. Two years ago, a single mother in the Twin Cities asked the state Medicaid program to pay for an intensive type of autism therapy for her 2-year-old son. She was turned down. State officials said the treatment - known as Applied Behavior Analysis, or ABA - is "not now, and never has been,'' a covered service.
"There is a lot of optimism now in the community of public health officials and advocates who work on AIDS. ... But, even as we know more, there are still disputes about how best to move forward on both prevention and treatment," commentator Richard Socarides, a former White House adviser under President Bill Clinton, writes in the New Yorker's "News Desk" blog.
Researchers have found new evidence that soft drinks sweetened with high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) may contribute to the development of diabetes, particularly in children.
House Democrats emerged from a caucus meeting Wednesday without a clear sense of how they will tackle the remaining problem of a public option, but may push a larger Medicaid expansion than initially proposed.
